After being discovered driving while inebriated, a Democratic lawmaker from Texas was detained for the third time and sent to jail, according to police.
Carla Wyatt, 56, the treasurer of Harris County, which is home to the metropolis of Houston, was involved in the most recent incident.
Wyatt, who was elected in 2022, was charged with similar offences in 2023 and 2025. According to the Houston Chronicle, she avoided being indicted for car burglary last year by telling a jury that she had been tested for a “mini-stroke.”
When Texas City police arrived at a reported vehicle at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, they discovered the female driver, Wyatt, “to be asleep.”
When an officer asked Wyatt where she was after waking her up, she replied that she was “in Heaven.”
The treasurer eventually stated that she was in Houston and attempting to travel to Galveston for a meeting the following morning after numerous attempts to persuade her to disclose her whereabouts and destination.
Wyatt first acknowledged drinking one glass of wine that night, but she later changed her account to say she had two.
Wyatt “smelt the odour of an alcoholic beverage emitting,” according to the arresting police.
