After being discovered driving while inebriated, a Democratic lawmaker from Texas was detained for the third time and sent to jail, according to police.
Carla Wyatt, 56, the treasurer of Harris County, which is home to the metropolis of Houston, was involved in the most recent incident.
Wyatt, who was elected in 2022, was charged with similar offences in 2023 and 2025. According to the Houston Chronicle, she avoided being indicted for car burglary last year by telling a jury that she had been tested for a “mini-stroke.”
When Texas City police arrived at a reported vehicle at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, they discovered the female driver, Wyatt, “to be asleep.”
When an officer asked Wyatt where she was after waking her up, she replied that she was “in Heaven.”
The treasurer eventually stated that she was in Houston and attempting to travel to Galveston for a meeting the following morning after numerous attempts to persuade her to disclose her whereabouts and destination.
Wyatt first acknowledged drinking one glass of wine that night, but she later changed her account to say she had two.
Wyatt “smelt the odour of an alcoholic beverage emitting,” according to the arresting police.
According to police documents obtained by ABC13, Carla Wyatt, 56, is the treasurer of Harris County, which is home to the city of Houston. Wyatt was elected in 2022 and has faced similar charges in 2023 and 2025, including when she avoided an indictment for vehicle burglary by telling a jury that she had been checked for a “mini-stroke” last year. Wyatt also sat on the rear bumper of her car to stay upright.
After failing a field sobriety test, she was arrested for driving under the influence.
According to jail records, Wyatt was transported to the Galveston County jail right away but has since been freed. We are eager to gather all relevant evidence in this case and look into the circumstances surrounding this arrest. According to a statement from Wyatt’s lawyer, Christopher Downey, “Dr. Wyatt denies that she committed any criminal act whatsoever.”
Since Wyatt is up for reelection in November, local officials must decide whether to suspend or remove him.
Wyatt was detained and accused with DWI in 2023 after driving with about twice the permitted blood alcohol content.
After receiving a late-night DWI, a Democrat lawmaker from Texas was caught for the third time and imprisoned.
Wyatt consented to participate in a program mandated by the court in return for those charges being dropped.
Wyatt was detained and accused with car burglary last year.
Harris informed prosecutors that a grand jury had decided not to indict her after she had been examined for a “mini stroke.”
