The socialist mayor of Seattle is under fire after she criticised a security camera program that led to the identification of a suspect who reportedly assaulted a 77-year-old man in the city.
Katie Wilson, who was compared to Zohran Mamdani of New York City upon taking office, has had difficulties in her first year.
Following the brutal beating of an elderly man in the city’s downtown last month, the 43-year-old has drawn fresh criticism.
The two males entered the frame of the security camera, shoved him to the pavement, and beat him up without seeming to provoke him.
Thanks to the video, Ahmed Abdullahi Osman, 29, one of the accused, was apprehended soon after while police looked for the other attacker.
However, after discovering remarks critical of the city’s CCTV program, the Real Time Crime Center, many have accused Wilson of being foolish. She stated only a year ago that installing additional cameras won’t instantly make our neighbourhoods safer, but it would undoubtedly make them more vulnerable.
Wilson was reacting to an approved expansion of the CCTV camera trial program, which she halted.

The two males appeared out of nowhere, shoved him to the pavement, and beat him up as the entire incident was captured on security video.
Thanks to the video, Ahmed Abdullahi Osman, 29, one of the accused, was soon taken into custody while police looked for the other assailant.
However, KOMO News stated that she suddenly changed her mind about the matter due to public pressure regarding a number of recent criminal occurrences.
“I think CCTV cameras are crucial to our public safety system, but we also need to be very careful to make sure that our data sharing and storage procedures don’t make that system vulnerable to abuse or misuse.”
The sufferer had to stay in the hospital for a week due to damage to his face, knee, and fractured arm.
The night of the incident, Osman was taken into custody, but he was freed before a bail hearing.
Since then, he has escaped and is currently wanted on a $200,000 warrant, according to Redmond police.
With the help of Seattle authorities, Redmond police have arrested Jes’Sean Tyrell Elion, the other suspect.
Mayor Wilson and the King’s County Prosecutor’s Office have been contacted by The Daily Mail for comment.
Similar to Zohran Mamdani’s recent triumph in the mayoral race in New York City, Wilson was elected as Seattle’s first democratic socialist mayor in November.
Wilson has changed his mind about security cameras in response to media pressure about a number of recent criminal events.
Known as “the white Mamdani,” she ran on a platform similar to that of her rival, promising to make the city more affordable.
Addressing Seattle’s homelessness epidemic, which is among the worst in the nation, is another essential component of her campaign.
Wilson frequently receives checks from her professor parents to cover childcare costs, which some have described as affluent and out of touch.
Wilson won the August mayoral primary by a margin of 9.5 points. Ballotpedia reports that the primary turnout in 2025 was somewhat lower than that of the previous election in 2021.
Approximately 40,000 more registered voters cast ballots in the general election than in the primary, according to unofficial King’s County election data that were last updated on Friday.
Compared to the 2021 general election turnout of 54.6%, that represented roughly 46% of the city’s registered voters.
The mayoral election in New York City, which saw 2 million ballots cast—the largest raw number since 1969 and the greatest percentage of registered voters to participate in the election since 2001—also stands in stark contrast to this lower turnout.
