A woman has died in a horrific accident in London, prompting emergency services to issue a warning to ‘avoid the area.’
A FEMALE cyclist has died in a major collision with an HGV in Central London, prompting emergency services to issue a warning to the public.
The London Ambulance Service (LAS) alerted the Metropolitan Police at 8.45 a.m. to reports of a collision involving a cyclist and an HGV at the intersection of Theobald’s Road and Southampton Row in Holborn. Both emergency services arrived on the spot and discovered a woman who was in critical condition. She was pronounced dead at the spot despite their best attempts. The HGV driver pulled over to the side of the road. The investigation is still ongoing, and no arrests have been made.
“Police were called to the junction of Theobald’s Road and Southampton Row at around 08:54hrs by LAS to reports of a collision between a cyclist and an HGV,” a Met spokeswoman said.
“Officers and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department arrived on the scene and discovered a woman with life-threatening injuries.
“Despite the rescue services’ best efforts, the woman was pronounced dead on the site.
“The driver pulled over to the side of the road. No arrests have been made as a result of the investigation.
“Theobald Road and Southampton Row have been closed to the public, and the public is encouraged to avoid the area.
“Any witnesses or anyone with information should contact police on 101 or the witness line on 0208 246 9820, quoting CAD 1726/04Aug,” says the statement.
On its Twitter account, the London Fire Brigade provided an update on the crash, along with a photo of emergency personnel on the scene.
“Firefighters are attending a significant road traffic incident at the junction of Theobalds Road and Southampton Row in Holborn,” the fire department wrote.
“There is a lot of traffic congestion in the neighborhood as a result of this. If at all possible, please avoid.”
“Sadly, a woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the road traffic collision in #Holborn,” the London Fire Brigade tweeted a short time later.
“Road closures on Theobald Road and Southampton Row continue in effect.
“Please stay away from the area.”
