In a land dispute, a relative of a Mississippi guns manufacturer killed him and his wife in their own home.
The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office reported that Walter Earnest Birdsong Jr., 62, the proprietor of WE Birdsong & Associates, Inc., and his wife, Amanda Lynn Birdsong, 43, were discovered dead inside their Monterey Road residence in Florence on Friday night.
According to Tide News, Kurt Tyler Birdsong, 56, the alleged gunman, was also discovered dead inside a locked bathroom from what seemed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to records, Kurt sued Walter and two other family members in 2019, claiming they had unlawfully given a 14-acre portion of the more than 100-acre property to a third party without his permission.
Kurt stated in the court documents that his father had verbally given him the land prior to his passing in 2015.
But in the end, the court decided against Kurt since there was no formal contract.
“You’d hear yelling sometimes late at night,” a neighbour who lives half a mile down the road told Tide News, recalling numerous visits from sheriff’s deputies over the previous two years to mediate arguments between Kurt and other family members. After that ruling, neighbours claimed Kurt’s behaviour became more erratic. “But no one ever imagined it would get to this point.”
On Friday night, Walter Earnest Birdsong Jr., 62, the proprietor of WE Birdsong & Associates, Inc., and his spouse, Amanda Lynn Birdsong, 43, were discovered dead inside their Florence home on Monterey Road.
Just before 4 p.m. on Friday, deputies from the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving a frantic 911 call stating that two persons had already been shot and an armed suspect had fled inside the residence.
The neighbour continued, “They’re a gun family, sure, but they were always professional about it.”
Investigators now suspect Kurt used at least two firearms to enter the main house on Monterey Road, where he had allegedly been forbidden after a violent altercation in 2022.
Kurt then shot Walter and Amanda several times during the ensuing altercation.
When police arrived, Kurt is thought to have fled to a toilet at the back of the house, closed the door and resisted all attempts at communication.
Just before 4 p.m. on Friday, deputies from the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office claimed they received a frantic 911 call stating that two persons had already been shot and that an armed suspect had fled inside the residence and barricaded himself.
Within eight minutes of the first deputies arriving on the scene, they reported that the suspect was still alive inside the residence since they could hear movements but no spoken responses.
The sheriff’s office also asked the FBI Jackson office, the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Clinton Bomb Squad for help because of worries regarding the family’s firearms business.
It is thought that a disagreement over family land led to the deaths of Walter and Amanda Birdsong.
Sheriff Bryan Bailey (pictured) requested help from the FBI Jackson office, the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Clinton Bomb Squad.
SWAT teams attempted to contact Kurt Tyler Birdsong, 56, the alleged gunman, for more than three hours.Sheriff Bryan Bailey stated in a preliminary statement that “we could not rule out the presence of unexploded ordnance, booby traps, or a large cache of weapons on the premises,” citing the family-run company that specialises in a proprietary weapons coating known for its lubricity and corrosion resistance.Consequently, before SWAT forces arrived, armoured vehicles were brought in and nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution.
Negotiators attempted to contact Kurt via a megaphone, a phone, and even communication devices deployed by drones when the armoured SWAT vehicles arrived on the area, according to WLBT.
According to Tide News, the SWAT squad ultimately spent over three hours attempting to contact Kurt.
At last, shortly after 7 p.m., deputies broke through the front door using armoured gear.
They discovered the bathroom door locked from the inside after clearing the main living spaces. The authorities then gained access by using a tactical ram.Rankin County Deputy Coroner Cliff Dunlap remarked, “This is one of the most challenging scenes I’ve worked in 20 years.” “Because of the sheer weight of family destruction, not because of the state of the bodies.”
Amanda was known as a lively presence in the family, while Walter was considered by those who knew him as a discreet but devoted member of the family company.
After the horrific shooting, the Birdsong family asked for their privacy.
Walter was described by those who knew him as a quiet yet committed employee of the family company.
Walter Jr., the founder’s son, grew up surrounded by manufacturing and firearms before assuming a managerial position at WE Birdsong & Associates.
He was a quiet, reclusive man who was always prepared to help out with farm labour or mechanical repairs, according to his neighbours.
Amanda, on the other hand, was characterised as a lively person who had previously attempted to resolve family conflicts. One neighbour remarked, “She was always the one trying to get everyone to sit down and talk.” “She got caught in the middle of this, which is tragic.”
Even though Kurt was supposedly residing in a different building on the family’s property, neighbours claimed that he grew more and more alone over time.
Since then, the family has released a statement requesting privacy during this trying time.
“We can’t express how heartbroken we are.” “The land that was meant to unite us has torn us apart,” the family said. “We ask that you respect our grief as we bury Walter, Amanda, and even Kurt—despite what he did, he was still family.” “Please offer up prayers for us.”
Officials apologised for the tragic outcome of the land dispute.
Kurt’s computer and mobile are being examined by the FBI Jackson Field Office as part of an ongoing investigation into the deadly shooting to look for any messages, plans or manifestos.
In order to make sure that no criminal activity took place and to rule out any further threats to the community, ATF is simultaneously performing a thorough inventory of the weapons and explosives at WE Birdsong & Associates.
In an attempt to avert any more tragedies, Sheriff Bailey also stated that he will ask for a state-level examination of how the legal system resolves family land disputes.
“This was a slow-moving tragedy that played out over years [through] court hearings, angry phone calls, and property line disputes,” said Dr. Lila Merritt, a sociologist at the University of Mississippi who studies rural family conflict. “When you mix family legacy, access to firearms, and unresolved legal grievances, you have a recipe for disaster,” she cautioned. “When, not if, is the only question.”
