A leading criminologist has revealed the three characteristics that serial killers share before committing their heinous crimes.

Animal cruelty, repressed anger, and child abuse are three signs of a murderer, according to Dr. Michelle McManus.

It comes after former Crown Prosecution Service lawyer Martin Decker, 69, was murdered and David Iwo, 23, was sentenced to life in prison last week.

Iwo told psychologists that the killing stemmed from his “hobby” of torturing and killing cats, and that he was “surprised” when he was apprehended after his first killing.

“In serial killer research, they often have some kind of animal cruelty involved in their history, and there is a degree of escalating behavior,” Dr McManus, the head of criminal justice at Liverpool John Moores University, told the Liverpool Echo.

“However, as was the case with Iwo, that doesn’t usually come out until they speak to psychiatrists.”

“As a result, it’s difficult to quantify and track animal cruelty in any way.”

Iwo sacked his legal team and chose to represent himself during a hearing at Preston Crown Court, insisting that “you can’t blame your parents for everything.”

“It’s interesting to hear Iwo talk about his anger toward his parents,” Dr. McManus added.

“A lot of research has been done on Adverse Childhood Experiences and childhood abuse.

“I know the court mentioned robbery as a possible motive, but I believe it was more of an opportunity for him to project his anger toward his parents.”

“We know he preyed on vulnerable men and animals, and this will have provided him with an opening.

“Martin Decker was brutally attacked with the hammer.

“He also mentioned how he enjoyed seeing the harm and pain he caused [to the owners]when he killed animals, which could indicate a desire to exert control.”

“We’ve seen this with a lot of serial killers.”

Others have pointed out that killers share a lack of empathy and a high level of narcissism.
