The school said over the weekend that a 19-year-old collegiate pole vaulter had died after being thrown from her car in a terrifying car accident.
Eva Moran, a standout at Toledo University, was declared dead at Marion General Hospital following Friday’s three-car collision in Ohio, according to 13abc.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol claims that Moran was driving east when she “failed to maintain assured clear distance ahead” and struck the left rear of 19-year-old Nathaniel Blankenship’s stopped car at 5:28 p.m. on May 29 in Claridon Township.
After entering the westbound lane, her car was struck by another vehicle driven by Dalila Zamudio, 23. Moran is thought to have been thrown out of her car by the impact.
According to the OSHP, Zamudio was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, while Blankenship was left with “possible” injuries.
In a statement the next day, Toledo director of cross country and track and field Andrea Grove-McDonough remarked, “There are no words to adequately express the sadness our team feels over the loss of Eva.”
After being catapulted from her car in an accident, a 19-year-old collegiate pole vaulter passed away. “She was a remarkable young woman whose energy, determination, and kindness made an immediate impact on our program.”
Eva had a cheerful outlook and a sincere affection for her colleagues in every practice, competition, and obstacle. She was happy to represent the University of Toledo and ready to learn and grow.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Eva’s family, friends, teammates, and everyone she impacted.” We shall never stop paying tribute to her and the model she established for us all.
At the most recent Mid-American Conference outdoor championships, Moran, a native of Caledonia, Ohio, excelled for Toledo, setting a new career-best time of 3.57 meters.
She finished 10th in the championships thanks to that pole vault score, which was sixth in school history.
She participated in track, cross country, and basketball for River Valley High School prior to attending Toledo in 2024.
Alena and Derrek, together with her sister Kyra and brothers Maxxon and Jaxton, survive Moran.
“The University of Toledo community is heartbroken by the loss of Eva Moran,” Toledo vice president and director of athletics Tom Moreland stated in the university’s statement. “Eva was an outstanding student-athlete whose determination, character, and positive spirit made an impact on everyone who had the opportunity to know her.” Toledo University star Eva Moran died in the horrific accident in Ohio on Friday. “We ask that everyone keep Eva’s family and those closest to her in their thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.” Our thoughts and condolences are with Eva’s parents, Alena and Derrek, as well as her brothers, Maddox, Jaxton, and Kya.
