Where has the IHU variant been found, and how did a new strain emerge?

THE IHU Covid variant first appeared around the same time as Omicron last year, but no cases have been found so far.

According to an early study of the IHU variant’s genetic make-up, it has more mutations than Omicron, which has become the virus’s global dominant variant in the last month.

Despite the fact that the World Health Organization (WHO) has known about IHU for more than a month, it has moved to downplay concerns about its potential effects.

So, where in the world has the variant been found thus far?

IHU was first identified in Marseille, southern France, in November.

The first person to contract it was a vaccinated man who had recently returned from a trip to Cameroon.

There is no evidence, however, that the strain originated in the African country.

The variant has been found in 12 people so far, including five children and seven adults, according to researchers.

All of these incidents occurred in the same southern French region.

As a result, no other country has reported an IHU case to date.

Concerns about the variant have been downplayed by the WHO so far.

“It’s been on our radar,” Abdi Mahamud, a WHO incident manager on Covid, said at a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, last Tuesday.

He did note, however, that it had not posed much of a threat up to this point.

As a result, the World Health Organization (WHO) has not classified IHU as a “variant of concern.”

This is why scientists are concerned when a new variant appears, as it may have an impact on vaccine effectiveness.

A preliminary examination of the IHU variant revealed findings that suggest the strain has 46 mutations, nine more than Omicron.

The study has not yet been peer-reviewed, and the researchers cautioned that “it is too early to speculate on virological, epidemiological, or clinical features of this IHU variant based on these 12 cases.”

The high number of mutations found in the Omicron variant has been suggested in early studies as a contributing factor.
