In partnership with health professionals from Pakistan, a team of researchers from the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur performed research to determine the importance of rehabilitation activities for osteoarthritis patients, particularly those with knee discomfort.
Professor Muhammad Tariq Rafiq, the study’s principal author, said, “There is a deficit in the medical literature for using rehabilitation exercises of key muscle groups of the lower limbs in non-weight bearing positions in overweight and obese osteoarthritis patients’ knees.”
The researchers looked at how rehabilitation activities for the lower limbs affected weight, functional strength, and exercise adherence in these patients to determine if there was any improvement in arthritic symptoms.
There were two groups in the study (one control group and one rehabilitation group) The study included 56 knee osteoarthritis patients between the ages of 45 and 60 who had a BMI of more than 25 units.
The rehabilitation group’s patients did lower-limb rehabilitation exercises three times a week for 12 weeks, with sessions lasting 45–60 minutes each.
The patients in the control group followed general daily care instructions for 12 weeks, which included guidance on mobility (avoiding stair climbing and running) and weight loss through healthy eating (avoiding eating fatty and sugary food).
After 12-weeks of intervention, data on each patient’s vitals and exercise adherence was obtained.
