Naps, or’siestas,’ are common in Spanish culture and even across the Mediterranean, but not in the United Kingdom. If you find yourself dozing off in the afternoon or at any other time of the day, you may be tempted to give in and sleep… but should you? Dr. Verena Senn, Neurobiologist and Head of Sleep Research at Emma The Sleep Company, was interviewed by this website to find out why YOU should start power napping.
According to Dr. Senn, a neurologist, the power nap is extremely effective.
“Naps refresh your brain, allowing you to approach the rest of your day with a fresh perspective while also enhancing memory and learning,” she said.
“Naps have also been proven to increase reaction time, logistical reasoning, and symbol recognition in studies.”
Even brief periods of sleep have been shown to improve memory, according to research.
“For example, if you have a huge exam coming up, consider sneaking in a little nap before the exam,” Dr Venn advised.
“When it’s difficult to fall asleep on hot summer evenings, many people opt to nap throughout the day to make up for lost sleep.
“However, it should be noted that a nap by itself will not compensate for poor sleeping habits.”
Still not persuaded? There are a few guidelines to follow to ensure that your naps are beneficial rather than harmful.
According to research, naps should be taken in the early to mid-afternoon.
This implies you should take a nap between the hours of 12 and 4 p.m. – no later!
“Any later, and you risk interfering with your usual evening sleep,” Dr. Senn advised.
Because there is no consensus on the perfect sleep length, your route to becoming a serial napper may entail some trial and error.
“While some research indicated that a 10-minute nap improved performance and alertness immediately, other studies revealed that an hour-long snooze helped individuals who performed poorly on a repetitious job improve the most,” Dr Venn added.
“The current opinion is that a 10- to 20-minute nap, which allows you to enter the earliest stages of restorative sleep, is enough to give you an extra boost of alertness and vigour.”Brinkwire Summary News”.
