Calorie restriction is defined as a reduction in calories consumed below the recommended daily allowance. The NHS recommends that women consume 2,000 calories per day and men consume 2,500 calories per day. According to a new study published in Circulation, eliminating 250 calories from your daily diet will considerably lower your risk of high blood pressure and bad cholesterol.

Researchers discovered that lifestyle variables like a nutritious diet and frequent physical activity can help prevent age-related increases in aortic stiffness, a marker of heart health that tends to worsen as people get older.

More than 160 adults aged 65 to 79 were followed in the study, all of whom were obese.

For 20 weeks, participants were randomized to one of three intervention groups at random.

The first group did nothing but exercise and ate a typical diet.

The second group exercised and reduced their calorie consumption by 250 calories, whereas the third group exercised vigorously and reduced their calorie intake by 600 calories.

“This is the first study to investigate the effects of aerobic exercise training with and without calorie restriction on aortic stiffness, which was quantified using cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging to get precise pictures of the aorta,” said Tina Brinkley, the study’s primary author.

“We wanted to see if combining calorie restriction with aerobic exercise for weight loss would result in larger improvements in vascular health in persons with obesity.”

The individuals’ aortic stiffness improved dramatically after they decreased 250 calories from their daily diet and added aerobic activity to their weekly routine.

Researchers also discovered that after removing 250 calories from their diet for five months, the subjects shed an average of 20 pounds, with many having the same health benefits as those who cut 600 calories per day.

“Our findings suggest that increasing aerobic activity while moderately reducing daily calorie intake may help reduce aortic stiffness and enhance overall vascular health,” Brinkley said.
