SLEEP IS IMPORTANT FOR YOUR HEALTH, yet up to one in every four Britons is jeopardizing their chances of getting a decent night’s sleep by consuming too much alcohol. What can you do to ensure a better night’s sleep? According to Delamare’s addiction treatment professionals, one out of every four persons has increased their alcohol consumption in the last year. While alcohol is known to cause a variety of health problems, one prevalent concern that is often disregarded is sleep disruption.

People who consume too much alcohol, according to Delamare, can wake up feeling “drowsy and sleep-deprived.”

What may surprise you, though, is how many drinks might lead to a restless night’s sleep.

Delamare claims that persons who consume more than six units of alcohol in one session, which is referred to as “binge drinking” in the UK, are most likely to miss out on sleep.

Two pints of five percent strength beer or two big glasses (250ml) of 12 percent wine equal six units of alcohol.

However, there is some evidence that even one alcoholic drink can make it difficult to sleep.

According to a 2018 study, regardless of unit consumption, alcohol has a considerable impact on sleep quality.

The researchers looked at the sleeping and drinking patterns of almost 4,000 people aged 18 to 65.

Low alcohol consumption reduced sleep quality by 9.3%, moderate alcohol consumption reduced sleep quality by 24%, and excessive alcohol consumption reduced sleep quality by approximately 40%, according to the findings.

The natural sleep cycle of your body is disrupted by alcohol. Binge drinking can induce deep sleep, interfering with the first two cycles of REM sleep.

Delamare explained: “Because alcohol is a depressive, people’s sleep starts earlier and they sink into deep sleep faster than usual.

“This frequently interrupts the restorative period of sleep by causing an imbalance in the sleep cycle between slow-wave sleep and REM sleep.

“This can leave us fatigued the next day, regardless of how long we stay in bed.”

Your body also needs to work extra hard to filter alcohol out of your system, leaving you feeling as though you haven’t had enough time to recuperate once morning arrives.

When you drink alcohol, the chemical gets absorbed into your bloodstream through your stomach.
