“Our findings suggest that a more effective long-term strategy for losing weight is to focus on cutting processed carbohydrates, not calories,” the researchers wrote in the British Medical Journal.

“Lowering dietary carbohydrate increased energy expenditure during weight loss maintenance, consistent with the carbohydrate-insulin model,” they concluded in the BMJ.

This metabolic effect could help with obesity treatment, especially in people who secrete a lot of insulin.”

Their 10-week study in 2018 followed 234 clinically obese adults and found that those who followed a low-carbohydrate diet burned more calories than those who followed a high-carbohydrate diet.

According to Harvard’s modeling, eating high-carbohydrate foods and meals causes an excess of insulin to be produced.

As a result of this insulin, the body began to store more glucose and reduced its ability to burn it.
