The National Library of Health published a study that looked at arthritic symptoms and how different meals may help or hamper the illness.
The study included 217 participants who were asked whether they consume each of 20 items and whether they believe these foods improve, worsen, or have no effect on their rheumatoid arthritis (RA) symptoms.
Food has an effect on 24% of the participants’ RA, with 15% reporting an improvement and 19% reporting a worsening.
The foods that were most frequently reported to relieve arthritis symptoms were blueberries and spinach, while soda with sugar and sweets were the meals that were most frequently reported to worsen arthritis symptoms.
The survey found that blueberries and spinach were the most frequently mentioned foods for improving arthritis, whereas soda with sugar and sweets were the most frequently mentioned foods for worsening arthritis.
“While we can’t draw firm conclusions based on this survey, previous research has linked higher use of sugar-sweetened beverages to an increased chance of getting arthritis,” the study said.
“A possible link between sugar consumption and rheumatoid arthritis inflammation needs additional investigation.”
The connection between sugar and arthritic flare-ups is well-established.
Many people believe that the autoimmune condition has just recently emerged; nevertheless, it was first recognized by Western doctors in the late 1800s, when sugar became more freely available.
