In the wake of an increase in fraud victims, Santander highlights the “best technique to stop a scammer.”

According to SANTANDER UK data, Britons receive 150 million dubious calls every week, with 60% reporting an increase since the coronavirus outbreak began.

This alarming increase in scam efforts during the Covid issue is obviously concerning, as Britons may be fooled by con artists. According to Santander’s statistics, people who reported a surge in suspicious calls during the epidemic had received an average of 180 of these calls since March 2020.

At least once a day, one out of every 10 persons is targeted.

Those who get strange calls should simply hang up, according to experts.

Despite the possibly negative effects and fraudsters’ bad intents, it appears that many people are afraid of appearing “rude” if they hang up.

According to Santander, 47% of Britons do not hang up, with one in five claiming it would be “impolite” to do so even if they were a fraudster.

Another 20% feel obligated to stay on the line in order to hear the caller out.

The findings come as Santander’s fraud experts have warned that engaging in conversation with a scam caller can have disastrous implications.

According to Santander’s own data, users have reported an 186 percent increase in phone calls that result in a safe account impersonation scam.

Nearly a third of the reports (31%) came from people in their early twenties and thirties.

Despite their increasing popularity, only 40% of British people have heard of safe account frauds, according to the study.

Suspicious cold calls are also linked to investment schemes.

Suspicious cold calls leading to investment schemes surged by 140 percent in March 2021 compared to March 2020, according to Santander data.

Just over half of those polled (53 percent) have heard of investment frauds, with 24 to 35-year-olds having the lowest level of awareness (46 percent).

“Unfortunately, scammers who utilize cold calls have capitalised on the pandemic, and we’ve noticed a rise in all types of scams being reported to us since March 2020,” said Dave Lowe, Head of Fraud at Santander.

“Our research demonstrates how convincing fraudsters can be: over half of those who indicated they had been scammed by a cold caller said they were duped by someone who was courteous and polite.”
