How to track down your stimulus payment using the IRS tool.
In mid-April, a THIRD stimulus check should have arrived in the bank accounts of many Americans.
In late March, the Internal Revenue Service processed four million stimulus payments, and roughly 127 million people received their (dollar)1,400 check.
If you’re still waiting for a payment, however, here’s how to track it down:
To begin, go to the IRS’s Get My Payment tool.
You’ll be able to see when the IRS sent your check, how much it should be, and how it will be paid if there is a delay, among other things.
You’ll need your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Tax ID Number (ITIN) in order to use it.
See how to get a replacement SSN card on the official SSN website if you’ve forgotten yours or need a new one.
You’ll also need to provide your birth date and address.
You’ll get one of two messages after you’ve entered your information:
Here’s what you should do if you’re told your payment status isn’t available.
It’s best to file a Recovery Rebate Credit claim if you receive this message.
Even if you aren’t required to, you will need to file a 2020 tax return.
Based on the information from this tax return, a Recovery Rebate Credit calculates your stimulus eligibility and amount.
Fill out the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet on the IRS’s website to see if you qualify for a payment.
On the IRS’s website, you can learn more about how to file a tax return electronically.
The IRS says it hasn’t received enough information to send your payment electronically if the Get My Payment tracker displays the message “Need More Information.”
If you didn’t receive your stimulus check in the mail, you’ll have to file a Recovery Rebate Credit claim.
You’ve been locked out of your account for 24 hours if you see the message “Please Try Again Later.”
This could be because the information you entered did not match IRS records, or you attempted to access the site more than five times in 24 hours.
If the IRS’s online tool says your stimulus check was sent to you but you haven’t received it, you must request a Payment Trace.
To start a payment trace, call the IRS at 800-919-9835 or mail in a completed Form 3911.
