Greenpeace UK has called on the Prime Minister to ban super-trawlers in the underwater protected area network of Britain.

Speaking on Sunday’s BBC Andrew Marr Show, Boris Johnson said that Britain “will be able to ban these huge trawlers that come and suck up everything from the seabed.” after Brexit.

“The Prime Minister has just claimed that after the UK leaves the EU, the government will take action against destructive large-scale fisheries that catch fish at an unsustainable rate, often in some of the UK’s most vulnerable marine areas,” said Will McCallum, head of oceans at Greenpeace UK.

If he is serious about what he says, bottom trawling and super trawlers over 100 meters long from the entire UK marine protected area network should be banned immediately,”If he is serious about what he says, he should immediately ban bottom trawling and super trawlers over 100 meters long from the entire UK network of marine protected areas,”

“Unless we start protecting these fragile habitats from the most damaging examples of industrial fishing, the UK cannot claim to be a world leader in marine conservation.”
