Smashed

Andy Robb

UCLan Publishing, £7.99

What is the book about?

Smashed is equal parts funny and heartbreaking, told from the perspective of Jamie, exploring the effect of his parents’ marriage collapse on his mother and six-year-old sister.

Who is it aimed at?

Though some of it is dark, it’s distinctly relevant for young people everywhere.

What was your favourite part?

The book tackles serious problems both societal and personal.

What was your least favourite?

What makes the book hard to read at some points, is simply how young Jamie is when all of this happens to him. The fact that he has to navigate heavy issues around family, masculinity and unhealthy coping mechanisms as a teenager only makes these themes more impactful and difficult.

Which character would you most like to meet?

Jamie. There was something distinctly caring and good about him.

Why should someone buy this book?

The book tackles how to deal with your emotions and where that can lead.
