With the release of House of the Dragon reigniting interest in the Game of Thrones series, fans may travel to many filming locations to immerse themselves in the realm of Westeros.
Many of the classic Game of Thrones sequences were shot in Northern Ireland, as most Thrones fans are aware. Approximately 80% of the popular series was shot there. It’s the ideal challenging site for filming a fantasy series, with its gorgeous scenery, evocative hills, and wild waves. Various major places in Northern Ireland were used to film iconic Game of Thrones sequences, and several tour companies have popped up to transport eager fans to walk in the footsteps of their favorite characters.
Fans in Northern Ireland can choose from a variety of bespoke Game of Thrones excursions, which include former cast and crew members who can provide insider stories and anecdotes from the set. In Winterfell, there are tours for foodies and cosplayers where you may dine like a Baratheon or become an archery pro. Visitors can also rent a car and go on a self-guided tour of the sights.
The Glass of Thrones trail in Belfast is one example of how Northern Ireland is capitalizing on cinematic tourism. Tourism Ireland erected six large stained glass windows depicting some of the most memorable scenes from Game of Thrones that fans can visit and take photos with to commemorate ten years of filming in Northern Ireland.
The Game of Thrones Studio Tour, which will be held at Linen Mills Studios in Banbridge, is also getting closer to opening. Since the popular TV program made Northern Ireland its home, fans and visitors have flocked in droves to see what has become known as the “Home of Thrones.” According to visitor statistics from 2018, Game of Thrones drew one out of every six out-of-state visitors to Northern Ireland, bringing in over 350,000 individuals and over £50 million to the local economy.
