TV Tonight: According to Aretha Franklin, The Gospel


Amazing Grace8.30pm, BBC Two This incredible film of the live recording of her 1972 gospel album Amazing Grace by soul pioneer Aretha Franklin had a long journey to the television.

It was filed away in the film vaults and rediscovered in 2007, initially challenged by Franklin, but it wasn’t until after her death in 2018 that her family gave their permission and permitted the release of the performance footage. What follows, backed by the Southern California Community Choir, is an intimate and harrowingly strong presentation of Franklin’s inimitable voice.
