In her first appearance on the show since her ex-husband Eddie Van Halen’s death in October, Valerie Bertinelli, who also hosts cooking shows on NBC’s “Today,” got emotional and tearful.
To introduce one of her favorite healthy recipes, Bertinelli appeared on the show from her house. ‘Valerie, it’s nice to see you, first of all,’ said host Hoda Kotb. We’ve been thinking about you in our hearts. We’ve been thinking about your son, Wolfie.
And we just wondered how you were doing right now, right now.
Bertinelli said, obviously holding back tears, “It’s so good to see you, too,” “I don’t know why the tears come. You know, when you hear voices and see people you connect with, and then … you guys always make me cry.”
She still wanted to text Eddie Van Halen, Valerie Bertinelli admits.
Bertinelli opened up on how she was coping with Van Halen’s loss. “It’s been rough,” she confessed. “Very bittersweet. We’re doing okay. We spent the holidays together. I’m going to see [her son]later today. We spent a lot of time together.”
“It’s hard,” she went on. “I tried to text him a couple dozen times, and I was like, ‘Oh, I can’t text him right now.'”
It was difficult.”It was hard.”
She was grateful to Carson Daly for her beautiful post about her son. It really touched my heart, and it touched my heart, and how you treated him, and how you were so nice to him.
And I wanted to thank you as a mother.’
Bertinelli and the Today team, holding back tears, went on to lighter issues including the hair color of Bertinelli and then moved on to the actual cooking section.
Eddie Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli have always been a family.
Van Halen and Bertinelli remained a close family after their divorce, related through their son, Wolfgang.
A touching Instagram post was posted by Bertinelli shortly after Van Halen’s October death.
“Forty years ago my life changed forever when I met you. You gave me the one true light in my life, our son Wolfgang,” she wrote, along with a picture of the family. “Through all your challenging treatments for lung cancer, you kept your great nature and mischievous grin. I am so grateful that Wolfie and I got to hold you in your final moments. I will see you again in our next life, my love.”

Later, with the caption, “Forever Family.” she filled her Instagram story with family images. From 1981 to 2007, Bertinelli and Van Halen were married. In 2000, Van Halen was diagnosed with tongue cancer, then cancer of the throat in 2014. Wolfgang Van Halen announced that his dad was diagnosed in 2017 with stage 4 lung cancer and in 2019 with brain cancer.
At the age of 65, Van Halen died Oct. 6. Wolfgang Van Halen shared on Instagram: “I can’t believe I have to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning,” He was the greatest father I have ever been able to wish for.
Every moment I spent on and off stage with him was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’m ever going to completely recover from this tragedy. I love you so much, Pop.
