Tobias Menzies, who plays Prince Philip in Netflix’s smash drama series The Crown, has come out about his involvement in the show, admitting that he hopes the late monarch never saw it.
In seasons three and four of The Crown, Tobias Menzies portrayed the late Prince Philip. In Netflix’s blockbuster drama series, he co-starred with Olivia Colman, Helena Bonham Carter, and Gillian Anderson. From the 1940s forward, the fictional show follows Queen Elizabeth II and the British Royal Family. Tobias recently commented on his stint as Prince Philip in a recent interview, noting that he hopes the late Duke of Edinburgh never saw him in the Netflix series.
In seasons three and four of The Crown, Tobias played Prince Philip alongside Olivia as Queen Elizabeth II.
Claire Foy and Matt Smith already portrayed the parts in the first two seasons.
Netflix is changing the whole ensemble of The Crown as the show moves into season five and moves closer to the present day.
Imelda Staunton and Jonathan Pryce will play the Queen and Prince Philip in the upcoming season.
Tobias spoke about his experience as the Duke of Edinburgh on the hit Netflix drama in a recent interview.
“I did my best to get close and attempt to comprehend and convey him to a screen,” Tobias stated of his characterization approach.
However, he made it clear that his portrayal of the Prince on The Crown was radically different from his real life.
He stated that the king had a long, varied, and fascinating life, which The Crown has attempted to bring to life in a limited way.
Tobias said he was “wary” not to mix fact and fiction while playing the king.
The actor admitted that he had no idea if Prince Philip has ever seen his rendition of him.
“I mean, honestly, I’d rather he hadn’t seen it,” he admitted. I don’t think he would have done it.
“I believe he would have despised the thought of his life being dramatized. He would have dismissed it as a ludicrous undertaking.”
The actor admitted that he was very certain the Prince would have preferred documentary than fiction.
“He is a firm believer in facts. Tobias told Radio Times, “It’s not speculation.”
