The most inconvenient aspects of moving are having to redirect mail, waiting for Wi-Fi to be deployed, and dealing with the mess left behind by past tenants. More than a third of 2,000 individuals who recently relocated said it was one of the most stressful moments of their lives, and 22% said they would never move again.

Other annoyances included being unable to fit furniture through the front door, fragile belongings shattering, and adjusting to new bin days. Moving subscriptions and utilities from one home to another ranked first among the 40 pet peeves, followed by having to pack and unpack your possessions.

Whether you’re renting or buying a home, it takes time and effort not only to physically move boxes, but also to deal with the mountain of paperwork that comes with it.

The list also included needing to make repeated phone calls to figure everything out, not having any shades or curtains to begin with, and struggling to use the new heating system.

“The findings illustrate just how many facets of moving home may generate stress,” said Charles Davies, a spokesman for full fiber broadband provider Hyperoptic, which commissioned the study.

“Whether you’re renting or buying a home, it’s not just the physical moving of boxes that takes time and effort, but also the avalanche of paperwork that comes with it, such as setting up Wi-Fi.

“When moving house, the to-do list can be unending, so making the task of setting up internet in a new location a seamless and stress-free experience can make life a lot easier.”

According to the poll, six out of ten people find moving to be “stressful,” with nearly a third describing it as “overwhelming.”

To make things easier, 38 percent wish they could relocate over several days rather than just one, and 26 percent believe greater communication from estate agents and solicitors would be beneficial.

Nearly one-third of those surveyed (29%) wished for Wi-Fi to be available as soon as they moved in, rather than having to wait an average of ten days for it to be set up.
