Sith Lords are lurking in the High Republic, according to Star Wars.
The High Republic era exists 200 years before The Skywalker Saga begins in The Phantom Menace, at a time when the Jedi Order and Republic were thriving in a time of light, and the threat of the Sith Empire had been (seemingly) destroyed.
However, Star Wars has now confirmed that there is a Sith Lord or two hiding in The High Republic! The question now is: where are the dark lords hiding, and is any character in the franchise that we already know a Sith?
Because of the fixed nature of Star Warscanon, we already know that the Sith weren’t completely exiled from the galaxy during The High Republic – they simply hid in plain sight, abiding by the Rule of Two.
Darth Bane, the leader of the Sith Empire during its fall and a secret survivor of the Jedi-Sith War, was responsible for the shift in Sith philosophy (from a sprawling empire to a two-person master-apprentice system).
The Jedi-Sith War was a major part of Star Wars Extended Universe (now “Legends”) lore, but Disney’s new Star Wars canon has kept the dark lord’s story and presence ambiguous… until now.
After The Empire Strikes Back, Luke Skywalker attempts to self-train as a Jedi in the new Star Wars (hashtag)20 comic book from Marvel.
Luke is led to a remote Jedi “temple” that is also a Vergence point in the Force by a Holocron from Yoda, but instead of a temple, Luke is eaten alive by a living planet.
Luke is able to commune deeply with the Force and make contact with the “imprint” of other Jedi who visited the site while trapped in the webbed catacombs of Planet Gazian.
Elzar Mann, a troubled Jedi character from the High Republic, appears as an “echo” to commune with Luke.
Elzar informs Luke that the Jedi Order has always had different phases, from Luke’s near-extinct light in the dark to the bright light of the High Republic era.
Elzar also reveals a key Star Wars timeline detail: The High Republic’s glory came eight centuries after the Jedi defeated the Sith Lord Darth Bane…
