After a long delay, Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finally has a release date – March 19, 2021 – on Disney+. The series was originally scheduled for August 2020, but due to the COVID-19 outbreak, it had to suspend filming. It now joins a notable list of this year’s Marvel originals coming to the service.
Avengers: Endgame on and follows the titular heroes, played by Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, as they grapple with Captain America’s legacy.
In keeping with this type of story, the series will also feature a villain from one of the stranger chapters in the good Captain’s history.
(Potential Falcon and Winter Soldier spoilers from the point).
Wyatt Russell is going to play a Marvel villain with a winding pathway
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”
Back in 2019, Wyatt Russell confirmed that, according to The Hollywood Reporter, he would play John Walker. Since then, set images have appeared showing Russell wearing a costume very close to his comic book counterpart.
The character later resurfaced as a U.S. agent, a government-sanctioned replacement for Captain America. Walker first appeared as the militaristic and anti-immigrant villain “Super Patriot.”
This story began during a period when Steve Rogers abandoned his traditional alter ego and became a Nomad, disillusioned with the U.S. government.
It appears that Walker is going to be a version of his US agent persona in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, based on pre-release footage.
The trailers also show him at a bombastic halftime show-like event, aside from the costume, hinting at his role as a PR prop.
The Marvel series’ story also lends itself well to Walker’s introduction. While Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) has chosen Sam Wilson/Falcon (Mackie) as his successor, it stands to reason that the American government has its own plans for the superhero identity it helped create.

In addition to Mackie and Stan, and newcomers like Russell, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier also features a strong cast of returning Marvel Cinematic Universe favorites.
Daniel Brühl will reprise his role as Helmut Zemo, the surprisingly influential main villain from 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. While Walker will likely clash physically with the heroes more often, Zemo once again appears to be the primary puppet master of the story.
The character will also wear his trademark purple mask from the comics.
Emily VanCamp will also return as Sharon Carter, the niece of Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter and occasional love interest for Steve Rogers.
The MCU has struggled to find a solid role for Sharon Carter so far, so it will be interesting to see what the series has in store for her. Since Steve ultimately made a pretty permanent commitment to her aunt, perhaps now is the time for her to grow out of his shadow.
