The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for its Easter eggs.

Marvel Studios’ films and television shows are full of references and tributes hidden by creative teams to delight fans and pay homage to the individuals who inspired them.

The new Hawkeye series is no exception, and in the first episode, there’s an Easter egg that not only references a former MCU character, but also pays homage to series star and MCU newcomer Hailee Steinfeld’s career.

Hawkeye begins in the Battle of New York in 2012.

Following the opening credits, Kate is seen sneaking around her college campus late at night, attempting to earn money by shooting the school’s famed bell with an arrow.

After the credits, the establishing shot of the school shows that the building Kate is ascending is known as Stane Tower, after Obidiah Stane.

As you may recall, Obidiah Stane was the first MCU villain. He co-founded Stark Industries with Tony, and without Tony’s knowledge, he sold weapons to terrorists.

At first look, this connection to Stane may appear basic and even out of place.

Many others certainly spotted it and disregarded it as a nice homage to a past Marvel character.

It does, however, go a step farther.

Hailee Steinfeld makes her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in this film. Marvel chose to name the building after a villain and situate it here with Kate Bishop, out of all the characters whose names could have been on it.

It all makes sense once you realize who played Obidiah Stane.

In the 2008 film Iron Man, Jeff Bridges, a well-known actor and Oscar winner, plays Stane.

Two years later, Steinfeld made her big screen debut in the Coen Brothers’ critically acclaimed version of True Grit.

Who was Steinfeld’s co-star in her debut film?

Of course, Jeff Bridges is involved.

By invoking Obidiah Stane, Hawkeye was able to tie Steinfeld’s debut film with her first scene in the Marvel universe.

The first two episodes of Hawkeye are now accessible on Disney+.
