In his career, Mark Wahlberg has played several positions, but has also turned down a few. A high-profile film director was interested in Wahlberg for a leading role, but the actor said he “got a little scared.” when he read the script.
Reportedly, Mark Wahlberg turned down his part in ‘Brokeback Mountain’
While in “Brokeback Mountain,” Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger famously starred, Wahlberg was also reportedly considered for the film. It turned out not to be a good match for him, however.
In 2017, the actor told the press, “I met with Ang Lee about this movie, I read 15 pages of the script, and I got a little creeped out” (via The Advocate). “It was very graphic, descriptive – the spitting on the hand, getting ready for it. I said to Ang Lee, ‘I like you, you’re a talented guy, if you want to talk more about it.'”
“Fortunately, he didn’t,” Wahlberg said. “I wasn’t in a hurry to see Brokeback, it’s just not my thing. Obviously it was tastefully done – look how it was received.”
Instead, Gyllenhaal was offered the part of Jack Twist and explained why it appealed to him in a 2015 Howard Stern interview. Gyllenhaal explained, apart from wanting to collaborate with Lee, ‘It moved me.
The script moved me.
And I was sort of like, f*ck it.
Heath Ledger prevented the Oscars from insulting ‘Brokeback Mountain’ once.
He said Mark Wahlberg was “trying to downplay reality.”
Wahlberg disclosed what he said in the past about turning down the role in a 2007 interview with’ Access Hollywood.’ The funny thing was,”The funny thing was, I was basically just trying to downplay the fact that I was never offered the movie,”I was basically just trying to downplay the fact that I was never offered the movie. “I mean, I had a meeting with Ang Lee, but he didn’t offer me the movie. You don’t pass up an opportunity to work with Ang Lee.”
“I’ve been afraid to do other things before, because of my own insecurities, but I’ve faced them … I was basically just trying to cover the fact that I was never offered the movie,” Wahlberg said. “He didn’t think I was a good enough actor for the role.”
Another huge role Mark Wahlberg almost turned down was
Directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson, Wahlberg very nearly turned down “The Departed,”
While speaking in a video for GQ about his positions, he remembered how he said no to the part. “The Departed was interesting. It was one of those things where I wasn’t obligated to do the movie, but my agent told Marty that I was,” Wahlberg explained. “Marty called me and acted like he was so excited about us doing this movie together, and I said, ‘I’m not doing the movie.'”
He added, “I wanted a different role and I wanted some different things,” “We had been talking about doing it for a long time, and then things just happened and the studio pushed back on certain things. I said, ‘Nah, I don’t want to do it.'”
“‘Dude, you’re free to do what you want to do.'”‘Dude, you’re free to do what you want.’
That was enough to persuade him to assume the position.
