The best pie shops in the UK were chosen at the recent British Pie Awards; did your local make the cut?
THE WINNERS OF THE BRITISH PIE AWARDS 2021 have been announced, so where should Britons go for the best pies?
The British Pie Awards have provided some guidance to Britons looking for the greatest pies across the country.
The Awards, which rank the finest pies in 23 categories, are extremely prestigious.
The Awards are picky about what they accept for judging, defining pies as “a filling entirely wrapped in crust and baked.”
“Entries that do not comply (open lattice topped, fruit topped, potato topped, samosas or other fried food, for example) will not be submitted for judging,” they stated.
Which pie took home the title of Supreme Champion?
It was Bowring Butchers’ Meat and Potato Pie from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, in 2021.
“We are simply a local business, and we’ve already sold out of our pies,” George Bowring, co-owner of Bowring Butchers, said.
“It hasn’t quite dawned on me yet, and it is overwhelming, exhilarating, and nerve-wracking all at once.”
“My father started cooking the pies 35 years ago,” he continued.
“I believe we won because it has exquisite pastry, baked to perfection, and glazed to perfection.
“My particular favorite is the pork and potato.”
The butchers in the area sell a wide range of pies, from huntsman and game pies to the most popular chicken pies.
Pullman Jacks from Liverpool won the Newcomer Award at the British Pie Awards.
With eight trophies, Pullman Jacks came out on top.
The shop debuted in March 2020, just before the Covid limits were imposed, but that didn’t stop Lee Caffery from becoming successful.
“I was ecstatic to receive the Newcomer Award on Friday, and many of my pies won individual accolades as well,” he said.
“There were 813 pies entered, so the award I earned is a great testimonial to my hard work and my products, and I am excited to expand my business nationally now as well.”
Lee studied as a chef and has cooked for some of the world’s most famous musicians, including Sir Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Britney Spears, and Katy Perry, while on tour.
The Young Piemaker Award was given out by the British Pie Awards to a member of the crew at WeeCOOk in Carnoustie, Scotland.
WeeCOOk also won the award for Best Vegan Pie.
WeeCOOK has a restaurant in Carnoustie, a shop in Dundee’s Wellgate shopping centre, and a website for those interested in trying their pies. “Brinkwire News in Condensed Form.”
