Practicality, low operating costs, and good fuel efficiency are the main criteria parents look for in a family car, with a budget of around £15,500.

The Audi A3 Sportback has been named the best-selling family car in the United Kingdom, beating out Honda, Fiat, BMW, and Volkswagen models.

A survey of 2,000 parents with children under the age of 16 looked at their budget and criteria for their next family car, and the 2017 Audi A3 with petrol power was voted the best option.

With an average budget of £15,500, families are looking for features such as practicality, low operating costs, and good fuel efficiency.

When it comes to vehicle type, they’re most likely to prefer a hatchback or SUV.

Audi, ahead of Fiat, BMW, Volkswagen, Honda, Toyota, and Mercedes, was the most desired brand.

Diesel is also a no-no, with only 10% of parents preferring it to petrol (33%), or hybrids (20%).

The study was conducted by CarGurus, an online automotive marketplace that identified the 2017 Audi A3 1.0-litre TFSI as the ideal used family car based on the criteria established by parents.

The five-door hatchback, which costs around £15,000 as a 2017 model with 30,000-40,000 miles on the clock and comes with a 1.0-litre TFSI petrol engine, has a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, and can return more than 50mpg in real-world driving conditions, is available with a 1.0-litre TFSI petrol engine, has a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, and can return more than 50mpg in real-world driving conditions.

The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer 218i, Volkswagen Golf 1.0 TSI, Fiat 500X 1.0 Turbo, Toyota C-HR 1.2, and Mercedes B-Class B180 finished ahead of the Honda Civic 1.0 VTEC Turbo and HR-V 1.5 VTEC, as well as the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer 218i, Volkswagen Golf 1.0 TSI, Fiat 500X 1.0 Turbo, Toyota C-HR 1.2, and Mercedes B-Class B180.

Meanwhile, the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer 218i and the Kia Carens 1.6 GDI have been identified as the best seven-seater models for families with three or more children, according to the study.

While SUVs and their smaller crossover siblings are popular body styles, the majority of used models priced under £15,000 have diesel engines, higher mileage, or – if petrol-powered – poorer fuel economy, averaging less than 50 miles per gallon.

“Using this research, we’ve created a buying guide that prioritizes the needs of parents,” CarGurus editor Chris Knapman said.

“When analyzing the survey results, our team of expert reviewers – who are also parents – attempted to strike a balance between the need for practicality, safety, and affordability.
