Steve Harwell, the frontman of Smash Mouth, has left the band.

Steve Harwell, the lead singer of Smash Mouth, is retiring from the stage.

The 54-year-old leader has announced his departure from the band due to physical and mental health concerns. “Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a rockstar singing in front of sold-out arenas and have been so fortunate to live out that dream,” Steve told TMZ of his difficult decision. “To my bandmates, it’s been a privilege to perform with you all these years, and I can’t imagine going on this amazing ride with anybody else.” “I can’t wait to see what Smash Mouth does next,” he says, “and I’m looking forward to becoming one of the band’s newest followers.” This may appear to be an unexpected outcome, but it’s one that Steve and the band have been anticipating for several years. So, what’s the deal with Steve leaving Smash Mouth? Steve was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a collection of disorders affecting the heart muscle, about eight years ago. “The normal muscle in the heart can thicken, stiffen, thin out, or fill with compounds the body generates that do not belong in the heart muscle,” according to the CDC. Heart failure, irregular heartbeats, and a lack of blood flow are just a few of the serious side effects.

Steve had previously suffered from acute Wernicke encephalopathy, which has “greatly damaged his motor functions, including speech, and compromised his memory,” according to the New York Post. Steve has also struggled with substance misuse in addition to these issues.

Steve has been afflicted by these long-term medical concerns for the past decade. The band’s performance at the Big Sip beer and wine festival on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021, appeared to be badly affected.

Steve can be seen slurring his speech and threatening individuals in the crowd in a video shot by TikTok user @doesthisfeelgood. The band appears to be having technical issues, which are never rectified because the members are out of sync due to a purportedly damaged PA system.

Steve is shown on stage swaying hard and flipping off several concertgoers while holding multiple beer cans in his hands. He also speaks directly to the audience, telling one person that he will kill their entire family.

Is the rest of Smash Mouth parting up now that their lead singer has left?
