Sony retaliates against Microsoft with a PlayStation game increase in the PS5 vs Xbox Series X battle.
As the rivalry between the PS5 and Xbox Series X heats up, SONY adds a new studio to its first-party lineup.
Housemarque, the creator of Returnal, has joined Sony’s first-party lineup.
With games like Super Stadust and Dead Nation, the Finnish gaming firm has earned a name for itself.
Housemarque was present at both the PS4 and PS5 launches, developing Resogun for the first and Returnal for the second.
That’s on top of Alienation, Matterfal, and Nex Machina, which was my prior favorite (until Returnal came along).
Returnal, in particular, was a shift for Housemarque, with third-person gameplay and a narrative-driven presentation replacing twin-stick shooting and side-scrolling platforming.
Returnal is without a doubt one of the best PS5 exclusives to date, with an 86 percent Metacritic score.
The acquisition was revealed in a PlayStation Blog post written by Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios.
“I’m ecstatic to welcome a new member to the PlayStation Studios family today!” the post reads.
“I’ve been a fan of Housemarque from the studio’s early days, when they first presented PlayStation fans to Super Stardust HD.
“The recent release of Returnal by Housemarque demonstrates that the studio has amazing vision and is capable of generating remarkable new games that resonate with our community.
“This addition strengthens PlayStation Studios’ creative force, and I am excited to see what the future holds for Housemarque.”
The company will continue to experiment with “new means of narrative transmission,” according to Housemarque co-founder Ilari Kuittinen.
Kuittinen explains, “This gives our studio a clear future and a steady opportunity to continue delivering on gameplay-centric approaches while also experimenting with new means of narrative delivery and pushing the frontiers of this modern artform.”
“This also means that we will officially expand the PlayStation family to a burgeoning industry base here in Helsinki, securing the history of Finland’s oldest game studio.”
“We at Housemarque are gamers, and we grew out of a desire to improve and play with aspects of games that we found particularly fascinating. We’re also not afraid to create our own course and experiment with different combinations.
“We can genuinely grow into our place in the industry with the assistance of SIE and its family of studios.”Brinkwire Summary News”.
