Siegfried, star of All Creatures Great and Small, talks about his ‘excruciating’ set mishap.
THE COMFORTABLE PERIOD DRAMA ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL is back for a second season. However, after an on-set mishap, star Samuel West, who plays Siegfried Farnon, was forced to work in a cast for months.
The Channel Five drama is based on a series of novels published by veterinary surgeon James Herriot (played by Nicholas Ralph) after he went to the Yorkshire Dales to look for the inhabitants’ farm animals and pets. Fans are ecstatic to see it return for new episodes, but actor Samuel West of All Creatures Great and Small suffered “excruciating” pain while filming a scene for the show.
The 55-year-old tripped and snapped his Achilles tendon during one of the final shots he was filming.
He elaborated: “I’m not sure how I managed to snap my Achilles tendon, but I trotted out, twisted something in my leg, and snapped it.
“It was excruciating, but I was so aware that the sequence had to be ‘in the can’ for the film to conclude that I went on for a little while with it strapped up simply, and then they had to figure out a method to get me on screen, pretty still, and from the waist up.
“As a result, I’ve been in a leg cast for almost four months to allow everything to recover.”
“You just have to grin — and limp on with it,” he said to The Yorkshire Post.
Samuel also revealed that he had to learn how to smoke a pipe while filming.
“Few people do these days, but Siegfried is a fan of briar, so I had to learn how to use it as well.
“It’s a bizarre ‘prop,’ therefore it’s strange. You have it in your mouth and use it to make gestures with your hands, and then there’s the matter of saying the right word at the right time while breathing.
“To make matters worse, I quit smoking 15 years ago.”
Siegfried owns the Skeldale House veterinary office and has hired James to work for him.
It took some time, but after a chilly start, the two ultimately warmed up to each other.
Siegfried’s position as a surgeon was essential to series one, as was how it damaged his relationship with his brother Tristan Farnon (Callum Woodhouse).
