With his hit cartoon Family Guy, Seth MacFarlane has been making millions of people laugh for over two decades, but his popularity goes back even further.
When he was just nine years old, the young writer started working as a newspaper cartoonist.
At 9 years old, Seth MacFarlane got a job as a newspaper cartoonist.
Seth McFarlane’s ‘Family Guy’ maker avoided death by oversleeping
After sending a cartoon that he drew on a whim, MacFarlane got the work.
The workers of the paper liked his work, entitled Walter Crouton, and shortly afterwards employed him.
MacFarlane held the position as the local paper’s cartoonist from the time he was nine until he went to college.
In an interview with Howard Stern that resurfaced in 2015, he explained how he got the job.
“It was a very small town,” said MacFarlane. “And I think there were only about 600 people in town at the time. So… The town was so small that I was the only cartoonist in town.”
In a small Connecticut town, he grew up in a log cabin.
MacFarlane grew up in a log cabin in the small town of Kent, Connecticut.
“A log cabin,” said MacFarlane. “My father built two houses when I was little – and both were a log cabin, and the other was a wood frame building that he couldn’t build – he refused to build a house that wasn’t built with the techniques that were used 300 years ago.”
His cartoon upset a local pastor very much,
Although for someone his age, MacFarlane’s work was impressive, not all of it was well received. He drew one in the newspaper’s cartoon contest showing a young boy asking for fries during communion.
The local priest was not satisfied with that.
“I actually got an angry letter from the local priest saying, ‘Shame on you for insulting Almighty God and those who love Him,'”I actually got an angry letter from the local priest saying, ‘Shame on you for insulting the All-Powerful God and those who love Him.’ “And further down it said, ‘Do you like me, check yes, no or maybe.'”
MacFarlane knew at that point that his words were strong enough to evoke people’s emotions, good and bad. He swears, though, that he isn’t purposely out to offend people with his jokes.
“I think it was kind of scary,” said MacFarlane. “The misconception is that I’m out to – believe it or not, I’m not out to upset people. My sense of humor just happens to be inherently annoying, I think.”
The early success of Seth MacFarlane did not bring him widespread attention,
MacFarlane’s life did not change that much after he got the job, despite accomplishing such a great feat at just nine years of age. He was held in the same high esteem by his classmates as before.
“You know, no, it didn’t really affect much, I guess it should have, right?” said MacFarlane. “I was still kind of a nerd.”
MacFarlane didn’t feel quite distinguished on a personal level, either. His confidence, even though he was doing remarkable work, was not exactly boosted.
“I don’t know that I’ve ever done anything that gave me tremendous confidence,”I do not know that I have ever done anything that gave me tremendous confidence.
