The handwritten words for Prince’s song Nothing Compares 2 U, which became a hit for Sinead O’Connor, are being auctioned off.
The lyrics, which are part of an auction of several of his personal possessions and clothing from his decades in music, are estimated to earn more than £55,000. Nothing Compares 2 U was written by Prince for his band The Family, but it was performed by Irish singer Sinead O’Connor for her second studio album in 1990, and it became a worldwide hit.
Anyone who buys the handwritten lyrics will also receive a letter of provenance from Prince’s former secretary, detailing how she acquired them.
“There was a tap on my door, and I looked out the bedroom window and saw a black BMW in my driveway, which I immediately recognized as Duane’s, Prince’s half-brother,” it continues.
“I walked downstairs and opened the door, and all he said was, ‘This is from Prince,’ and then he got into his car and drove away. I was both astonished and honored when I realized what Duane had delivered.
“Prince would tape the lyrics to his voice microphone with white console marking tape; that tape is still on both pages.”
Other items belonging to Prince, such as his stage-worn lace shirt and cufflinks from the Purple Rain Tour, are likely to fetch around £55,000 at the auction.
The late singer’s beaded jacket from the 1986 film Under the Cherry Moon is expected to sell for more than £30,000.
Handwritten and signed lyrics from Bob Dylan’s 1965 hit Like a Rolling Stone are also on the block at the Boston-based RR Auction, and are projected to fetch more than £35,000.
Anyone who purchases one of these will also receive a note of authenticity from Jeff Rosen, president of the Bob Dylan Music Company, from 2013, stating that “to the best of my knowledge, there are only five of these manuscripts that exist as of the date of this letter.”
The auction will finish on June 24 and will include an Eddie Van Halen stage guitar as well as a Beatles promotional record signed and inscribed to George Harrison’s older sister Louise on the back cover.
“Beatles albums autographed to one of their family members are nearly nonexistent and immensely desirable,” a spokeswoman for the auction house stated.
