Second-home sales in Spain are increasing as Britons rekindle their interest in Spanish real estate.

A RISE IN DEMAND for second homes in Spain has prompted a rise in sales among British purchasers, with property on the Costa del Sol proving particularly popular.

According to Taylor Wimpey Espana, a renowned Spanish property developer, home sales have climbed to levels not seen since 2019.

The corporation has praised the demand as a result of the unexpected increase in numbers.

“Confidence has been returning to the Spanish second homes market for several months, and it’s excellent to see that British purchasers have now regained the desire for Spanish property that they had before the pandemic,” said Marc Pritchard, Sales and Marketing Director at Taylor Wimpey Espana.

Sales of Spanish homes to British purchasers have increased by 56 percent compared to the same period in 2020, when the property sector was adversely hit by the pandemic.

“This year is shaping up to be a fantastic one for Spain’s second homes market – our estimates for August and September are looking extremely positive,” Mr Pritchard added, expressing his excitement for the coming months.

“To balance off the strains of the previous year, buyers want sunlight, fresh air, and gorgeous beaches.”

The Costa del Sol, in southern Spain, is famed for its beautiful coastline and microclimate, which ensures a warm summer and moderate winter. It has proven to be a popular choice among British property purchasers.

Some purchasers have chosen second homes with panoramic views of golf courses on the Costa del Sol, penthouses with unrivaled sea views, and properties in Marbella, according to Taylor Wimpey Espana.

Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, has proven to be the second most popular destination for home purchasers, with penthouses and flats with private gardens gaining attention.

Taylor Wimpey Espana said a variety of homes, including duplexes, apartments, and penthouses, were all bought up off-plan in the municipality of Ses Salines.

The Costa Blanca, in the province of Alicante, has been ranked as the third most popular location for British property purchasers, with flats for as little as €185,000 within walking distance of the beach.

Despite the impact of Covid-19, official numbers show that average home prices are progressively rising, with sales up 2.1 percent year on year and new-builds up 4.2 percent, according to Expatica, a website that provides information to expats.
