REVIEW: A strange, melancholy comedy about a rogue.
Jimmy Cullen, now back in his Irish homeland and burdened by some unfathomable past wrongdoing, explains that he is going to buy a rope to hang himself.
Gritty Aaron Monaghan plays Jimmy Cullen, who is scowling. “Well, then, I suggest you go with the 14mil, it’s good and sturdy,” the hardware store clerk suggests.
It sets the tone for Philip Doherty’s strange, gloomy comedy, in which the rain of County Cavan plays an important supporting role.
With dogged determination and a lot of scowls, Aaron Monaghan as Jimmy holds it all together. Even so, he made me laugh a lot.
