Princess Diana and Prince Charles married 40 years ago, and the bride’s gown cost £9000.

The Prince and Princess of Wales, Charles and Diana, married 40 years ago today. The bride donned an extravagant gown that has since become one of the most iconic wedding gowns of all time.

The royal couple married in a traditional Church of England service at St Paul’s Cathedral in London on July 29, 1981. Lady Diana Spencer, as she was known at the time, stunned the crowd in a fairytale-like gown as she walked up the aisle with her father, Earl John Spencer, when she was 19 years old. The wedding gown was priced at £9,000, which equates to approximately £35,000 in 2021.

The gown was constructed of ivory silk taffeta and lace and hand-embroidered with 10,000 pearls and sequins.

Elizabeth and David Emanuel were the British designers, and this outfit made them household names in the fashion industry.

The gown included a 25-foot train of ivory taffeta and antique lace that slid along the cathedral’s aisle.

Princess Diana allegedly desired the longest train in royal wedding history, thus the gown was designed to accommodate her requests.

Her wedding gown is widely regarded as a symbol of 1980s fashion and wedding dresses.

Many people liked the huge shoulders and balloon-styled skirt, but by today’s fashion standards, the wedding must have taken place in 1981.

Some fashion critics criticized the dress’s crumpled appearance; nevertheless, the designers maintain they were unaware the material was so prone to crumpling.

“It was a magnificent garment, but someone should have informed them that it was going to be jammed in the carriage!” says royal wedding dress designer Chloe Savage.

“It appeared as though it needed to be pressed.”

Diana wore an ivory silk tulle veil over an heirloom tiara from the Spencer family, which made her look lovely and innocent.

Kevin Shanley, Diana’s hairdresser, dressed her hair in a short crop for the momentous occasion.

Clive Shilton designed her low-heeled shoes, which had C and D initials hand-painted on them.

Diana’s bridal makeup was done by Barbara Daly, and the nineteen-year-old looked stunning.

Prince Charles, who was 32 at the time, wore the full dress naval commander outfit that the successor to the throne was expected to wear.

Their wedding was dubbed a “fairytale wedding” and the “wedding of the century” by everyone.
