One member inquired on one of these pages what she should do if her towels don’t look or feel the way she wants them to when they come out of the washing machine.
“How do you all get your towels to smell fresh and feel fluffy again?” she wondered.
“I wash my towels, and as soon as they come out of the dryer, they smell fusty.
“It irritates me to no end!
Fortunately, the cleaning enthusiast’s post drew dozens of responses, many of which contained nuggets of wisdom.
There were several various suggestions, but one stuck out above the rest.
Mrs. Hinch’s fans suggested cleansing the detergent drawer in the washing machine and using natural products instead of fabric conditioner.
Baking soda crystals and white vinegar are advised by cleaning experts.
“Sounds like you need to remove the buildup of product out of them,” one person said. Instead of detergent, use soda crystals and white vinegar instead of softener. “Apparently, it’s not advisable to put fabric conditioner in with towels, flannels, and other such items,” another person wrote. I’ve been putting white vinegar and a little Zoflora in the softener section since I learned this. Towels smell so much better and don’t smell after they’ve been used,” said one cleaning fanatic, who cautioned against using fabric softener. They said, “Never use fabric softener on towels – it affects the absorption.” Another person added, “White vinegar instead of your softener gets them fluffy again.” One Mrs Hinch fan suggested, “Add soda crystals to the detergent.” Another suggested, “White vinegar, no detergent, then hang out to dry.” Other suggestions included washing towels at a higher temperature and using Fairy Non-Bio Liquid Detergent.
