Like everyone else, singer Miley Cyrus didn’t have an easy 2020. She broke up with her boyfriend, Cody Simpson, and wasn’t able to perform much due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. However, she did release an album, Plastic Hearts, which became the No. 1 rock record in the U.S.
But it seems like her 2021 is off to a rocky start.
A few days into the new year, Cyrus revealed that her beloved dog, Mary Jane, had recently died. Learn more about her pet and read the artist’s full statement here.

Cyrus is no stranger to pets.
During her years in the spotlight, she’s had many them, including pigs and other farm animals while living in Malibu with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. However, more than any other creature, Cyrus has had many, many dogs.
Sadly, not every one of her experiences with canines has ended positively. Like a few other Disney stars (including friend Demi Lovato), one of Cyrus’ dogs, Floyd, died while she was on her Bangerz Tour in 2014. She quickly took in another dog, Moonie, but was too heartbroken, and gave him away.
Among them is her pitbull, Mary Jane

She adopted Mary Jane in May 2012, announcing on Twitter, “Meet the newest addition to our family Mary Jane 🙂 I love rescuing.” Around the same time, Cyrus and Hemsworth adopted a puppy, Happy.
Along with other dogs like Emu, Mary Jane is among Cyrus’ most-discussed of her dogs. Some of that comes back to her name. “Is it weird that I have a dog named Mary Jane? Or is that what you would imagine my dog’s name would be?” she said in a 2017 interview, alluding to her history with marijuana.

Anyone who knows me & it doesn’t have to be well is aware that my best friend in the whole world is a rescued pit bull mix named Mary Jane.
crackin a smile thanks to Mary Jane pic.twitter.com/sLwhb962Vy— Miley Ray Cyrus (@MileyCyrus) April 4, 2014MJ was diagnosed with cancer over a year ago …. & since then multiple types and tumors. I was told it’d be an uncertain amount of time until she’s gone.
Advised to spend every second savoring her special spirit…. which wasn’t anything new. I had been for 10 years.
In life it is easy to take things for granted.
To let little miracles pass you by without moments of gratitude.
To be oblivious when rays of heaven shine down onto you.
But when it came to my ANGEL Mary Jane… never once did I forget the gift I had been given. She made it impossible to. She was a dog with wings in a way.

It was something more than a friend or family member. Something so different. You can’t define it. Our connection was purely DIVINE.
An incomparable love.
We’ve never said hurtful things we didn’t mean to each other. Never have we fought and went to bed angry. Not once has our loyalty wavered.
Mary Jane all up in my mouthhhhh ❤ pic.twitter.com/HXwSqS2l— Miley Ray Cyrus (@MileyCyrus) December 14, 2012She has come to my rescue every time my heart has broken. Put me back together again. Going thru this pain without her magic power is so lonely.
This time it was my duty to return all her favors and keep her comfortable, happy, & free of any pain for as long as possible…. she has always done that for me. She is no longer hurting but I am.
That’s what love it.
Nothing like a little Mary Jane in the a.m. pic.twitter.com/Pq8zyPWM— Miley Ray Cyrus (@MileyCyrus) December 3, 2012Mary Jane passed with grace, dignity, peace, & power. She lived by the golden rule of kindness and compassion towards all. She was strong when she needed to be but never for to [sic]long. She would never let her soul close. She lived so open.
To love and be loved.
If only we were all more like Mary Jane.
