Mark Harmon may definitely return to the cast of ‘NCIS.’
Fans of NCIS have been guessing for weeks, but last night’s episode confirmed Mark Harmon’s departure from the program.
Harmon has faithfully played Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs for nearly 18 seasons. Gibbs, on the other hand, notified his partner that he would not be returning home in the most recent episode, “Great White Open.” Instead, he appeared to be putting a stop to his long career as a cop in favor of a life in Alaska.
Mark Harmon has departed the cast of ‘NCIS,’ but will continue to serve as an executive producer.
Many folks were surprised to learn that Harmon was departing the NCIS cast. For many years, he and his character have been integral to the show’s fabric. However, the actor isn’t fully abandoning the show. Harmon has not only acted in the hit series, but he has also worked as an executive producer for the show. While the actor has left the cast as a series regular, he will continue to contribute to the show’s success as an EP behind the scenes.
The showrunner of ‘NCIS’ teased a possible comeback in a statement.
Fans of NCIS may be disappointed that Harmon will no longer be a regular on the show. However, it’s possible that Agent Gibbs hasn’t been found yet. Harmon is likely to return to the show as a guest star and appear in a few episodes in the future. In fact, showrunner Steve Binder’s statement following Harmon’s departure seems to imply as much.

“Mark continues to be a vital part of the fabric of the program as an executive producer and good friend,” Binder said in a statement. “Staying loyal to our characters has always been our north star, and that truth has always driven the stories we create and where those characters go. As long-time fans of the program may have noticed throughout the years, “Never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out” when it comes to the show’s future. In future seasons, Harmon could reprise his role as Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs. While Harmon hasn’t stated that he’ll return to NCIS in some form, the powers-that-be seem optimistic that Agent Gibbs’ swan song hasn’t yet been sung. When Deadline met with Kelly Kahl, President of CBS Entertainment, he expressed confidence that Harmon will remain a part of the cast indefinitely.
