Madonna’s co-star in the film Like A Prayer comes out against the ‘controversy’ of ‘kissing Black Jesus.’
MADONNA’S co-star in her smash hit music video for Like A Prayer has said that he doesn’t think their kiss was a “big deal.”
Madonna stunned the world in 1989 when she released the video for her smash track Like A Prayer, which caused quite a stir. The music star sparked controversy by kissing a black saint next to a blazing cross.
She is kissing not just a Black man, but a Black Jesus.
The 62-year-old has claimed on multiple times that she has been excommunicated by the Vatican, something Cardinal Ersilio Tonini believes should happen on behalf of Pope Benedict XVI.
While it may have been risky for Madonna to have an interracial kiss in her music video at the time, her co-star Leon Robinson, 59, says he doesn’t think it was a big deal.
While the actor was ecstatic to be cast in the music video, he was unaware that it marked Madonna’s return to the music industry.
“What I didn’t realize was that it would be the top-page story of everything,” he continued, “not just the entertainment sections, but the front pages of newspapers and the first story on the news.”
“[In 1989], I don’t think the interracial kiss between Madonna and me was that big of a deal,” the New York City-born actor said of the scene.
“It was who she was kissing and that I was Black,” he told Allison Kugel on her Allison Interviews program.
“For starters, most people thought she was kissing Jesus, since Jesus is shown as a Black man.”
“That was and continues to be a far bigger source of contention,” he said.
“She’s not just kissing a Black man, she’s kissing a Black Jesus,” Leon, a father of one, remarked.
“Even though he was merely a Saint who came to life in the video, people mistook him for Jesus.”
“So that’s where the dispute really started,” he continued.
“There were a lot of parallels [in the video], but none were as large as that.”
