Law & Order: SVU is one of television’s most successful and longest-running crime dramas.
A number of major stars in the lead roles, including Mariska Hargitay and rapper Ice-T, are in the series, which also features unsettling and graphic plots that keep viewers glued to their screens. Law & Order: SVU has an outstanding supporting cast, in addition to the main cast. Richard Belzer is a respected character actor who was born in 1944 and originally started his career as a stand-up comic in the entertainment industry.
Belzer appeared in a number of film and television projects in the seventies and eighties, including minor parts in films such as Scarface, Fame and Night Shift. He also worked on the radio, lending his talents to programs such as Brink & Belzer and the National Lampoon Radio Hour.
Belzer was a well-known character actor on television in the nineties. He starred in the Homicide: Life on the Street television series in 1993, portraying Detective John Munch.
He played the role of Munch in Law & Order: SVU when the series premiered in 1999, after creating the character in this series.
Detective Munch soon became one of the series’ most popular characters – however the influence of Belzer went well beyond Law & Order: SVU, as he played the character in a number of other series and on different networks.

Belzer, however, hung up his hat after the fifteenth season of the acclaimed police drama and left the series.
Anyway, according to E! “Showrunner Warren Leight explained, “There’s a mandatory retirement at the NYPD before your 63rd in the real world, which we’re trying very hard to mimic.
And we tried to find out how to deal with that.
The reason the NYPD does it that way is because you can’t have guys chasing after 65-year-old men. It’s a hard and fast law. Belzer is largely retired these days, enjoying the fruits of his labor and working on occasional writing ventures. Fans are still in love with Belzer and the character he brought to life, though.
