The Caterpillar claimed that they chose this costume because “metamorphosis” has been a theme in their lives. They saw a galaxy from outer space on the screen as they turned on their TV in their future home. They said that they had left home when they were young and had gone through a difficult time. According to the Caterpillar, they slept in their car for a while and were homeless at one point. They even resorted to stealing to stay afloat, as evidenced by the Caterpillar’s theft of a basketball. Caterpillar eventually ended up in prison. A framed photo of the Great Lakes was also included in Caterpillar’s clue package.

Caterpillar may have arrived late in the competition, but its performance of Beyonce’s “If I Were a Boy” stunned the judges. Robin Thicke recognized a boyband vibe and assumed it was Howie Dorough of the Backstreet Boys. Ken Jeong guessed Aaron Carter, the brother of Backstreet Boys vocalist Nick Carter, on the same tune. Jenny McCarthy and another Backstreet Boys member, AJ McLean, filled out the boy band guesses. After that, Thicke and Jeong announced they wanted to modify their guesses to McLean as well.

The Masked Singer airs on Fox on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET. If you can’t watch the episodes live, you can turn to FuboTV, which offers a free trial if you’re a new user. All episodes of The Masked Singer will be accessible on Hulu the day after they air, as is customary.
