In ‘Moonlight,’ Trevante Rhodes drew inspiration from his gay best friend.
Trevante Rhodes’ breakout performance came in the 2016 film Moonlight.
The film was a coming-of-age story about Chiron, a young gay black guy growing up in poverty, directed by Barry Jenkins. Rhodes’ portrayal of Chiron earned him widespread recognition and launched a career that is still flourishing.
However, in order to do the character properly, Rhodes had to tap into his emotional reserves in order to deliver a gripping performance.
In one of these locations, the young actor drew inspiration from his gay companion.
Trevante Rhodes got his start as an actor after catching the attention of a casting director.
Rhodes was destined to be a track star rather than a Hollywood star. He was born in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, on February 10, 1990, and relocated to Little Elm, Texas, when he was ten years old.
His ability to run track earned him an athletic scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin after he from high school.
He was good at the sport but not particularly enthusiastic about it.
In an interview with Out, Rhodes claimed, “Even then, I disliked running.” “However, it was a way for me to pay for school.” Rhodes, like many other college students, was using the university’s resources to figure out what he wanted to do with his life. At the time, he was majoring in petroleum land management, and while he enjoyed his theater class, it wasn’t his true calling. Unlike other actors who are ready to amuse an audience as children, Rhodes only pursued theater as an elective in high school.
But Providence had other ideas for Rhodes.
“I was jogging on campus my last semester and this lady flagged me down,” Rhodes told The Daily Texan. “She said, ‘You look like the guy I’m casting in this movie in my brain.’ At the same time, I was taking an introductory theater class to fulfill my degree requirements, so I told my professor about it, and he said, “Dude, this is someone who is well-known in the field, so you should probably go ahead and do it.” Despite the fact that Rhodes attended the audition, he admits that he did not pass.
Nonetheless, Rhodes aspired to improve. After graduation, he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a full-time acting career.
