In a new standup video, Dave Chappelle sends a message to trans Netflix employees.
In a combative new standup video posted on his Instagram page Monday, Dave Chappelle finally addressed the controversy surrounding his current Netflix special, The Closer. Despite saying he would meet with transgender Netflix employees and representatives of the trans community, the comedian refused to budge on “anybody’s demands.” He also stood by his original transphobic statements in The Closer, saying, “I said what I said.” According to Variety, Chappelle reacted to rumors that he refused to communicate with transgender Netflix staff, but maintained that was not the case. “I would have accepted if they had invited me, though I’m not sure what we’d be talking about,” Chappelle remarked in the video. “I said what I had to say, and boy, did I hear what you had to say. How could I not, my God? You stated that you wish to work at Netflix in a safe atmosphere. I don’t think I’m the only one who can’t go to work anymore.” Dave Chappelle (@davechappelle) wrote on Twitter that the dispute was caused by “business interests,” and that some members of the LGBTQ+ community had backed him up. “I want everyone in this room to understand that, despite how the media portrays it, it is not a case of me vs that community. Do not hold the LBGTQ [sic]group responsible for any of this nonsense “According to Chappelle. “They don’t have anything to do with this. It’s all about corporate interests and what I’m allowed to say and what I’m not allowed to say. For the record, and I want you to know this, everyone I know in that community has been supportive and loving, so I’m not sure what the fuss is about.” Later, Chappelle stated that he is working on a documentary on his 2020 comedy tour, but that due to the controversy, it would not be screened at upcoming film festivals. “Nobody will touch this film today, neither a film business, a film studio, or a film festival. Thank God for Ted Sarandos and Netflix; he’s the only one who hasn’t yet cancelled my subscription “According to Chappelle.
Chappelle shared his list of requirements for meeting members of the trans community near the end of the video. The first is that they must have seen The Closer from beginning to end, and the second is that they must have seen The Closer from beginning to end, and the third is that they must have seen The Closer from beginning to end, and the fourth is that they must have seen
