In a flashback footage, ED Sheeran can be seen uncomfortably dancing to Justin Timberlake and being viciously rejected by Arlene Phillips.

The 30-year-old actress was 16 when she appeared in the ad, auditioning for ITV’s Britannia High alongside Pixie Lott and West End legend Zizi Strallen.

The short-lived show starred Mitch Hewer from Skins, and ITV filmed their audition process for a behind-the-scenes special at the time.

Producers scouted the UK’s leading performing arts schools for the 140 best young performers, and Arlene, a former Strictly Come Dancing judge, led the judging panel.

While the rest of the panel was blown away by Ed’s vocal abilities, Arlene immediately ruled him out after seeing his motions.

Teenage Ed can be seen stomping his way through a routine to Justin Timberlake’s Like I Love You, dressed in a dark green top and pants.

Arlene mutters to herself as she watches him in disbelief: “It’s not even a possibility.

“We’ll have to locate some folks who can dance eventually since they can’t all be non-dancers.”

Previously, she had insisted: “We’re seeking for triple threat performers who can sing, dance, and act.

“They have to be superstars.”

Ed’s singing ability got him to the next round, but he struggled with the dance again, despite Arlene’s assurances that “he is trying” but “hasn’t a clue.”

Ed said to the camera, “I’m just trying to cement that in my mind… I believe I made a mistake since I was accidentally kicked in the face.” The other judges were still blown away by Ed’s musical abilities, as he played guitar while one judge quipped that they would “sign him anyway.”

“I don’t think anyone can say they didn’t want the role and weren’t hoping to get the job, everyone wanted it as much as the next person,” Ed stated, looking defeated after being rejected by the show.

After rising to prominence in 2011 with his first of many hit singles, The A Team, he eventually had the last laugh.

In fact, his most recent tour, Divide, which ended in August 2019, set a new record for the highest-earning music tour ever, grossing £607 million across 255 performances.

Europe brought in £58.9 million, with Asia contributing £11.4 million and North America contributing £125,624 to the total.

Ed is now said to be one of the country’s wealthiest musicians, with a net worth of £200 million.
