‘I’m so proud!’ – Stephen McGann discusses the success of Call the Midwife.

AFTER 31 YEARS OF MARRIAGE, some couples may have found themselves in a rut, if not outright staleness.

Stephen McGann, star of Call the Midwife, has no such apprehensions.

In fact, he sounds like a newlywed as he gushes over his wife, show writer Heidi Thomas.

“I can’t express how proud I am of Heidi,” the actress says.

“I love the bones of her – she’s wonderful. There’s no secret to a long-lasting marriage.”

“However, if I had to guess, I’d say it’s probably the same as the secret to Call The Midwife – it’s just love and sincerity.”

That applies to the show as well as my marriage to Heidi.”

Stephen, 58, has played Poplar medic Dr Patrick Turner in all ten series of the popular TV show.

He goes on to say, “The show is all about love.”

“It’s as simple as that.”

It’s not a clever conjurer’s trick to make someone love you, just as it isn’t a clever conjurer’s trick to make an audience cry in Call The Midwife.

It’s all about people recognizing themselves in that show.

When they watch the show, they cry because they’re grieving for a better part of themselves.

“And, to return to my marriage, it’s all about love.”

You don’t have any grand plans in mind.

We’ve raised a child together, [their son Dominic, 24], and you try every day with the deepest of friendship, regard, and love.

“What I can say is that in 31 years, I’ve never loved her more than I do now.

We laugh more, share more, and are more fond of one another than we’ve ever been, and it’s only getting better.

But, because everyone is different, I can’t offer a magic formula.

I met this wonderful person who is both good and kind, as well as intelligent and caring.

“She is devoted to her subject, and I am devoted to her.

That is the key to my marriage’s success.”

NOW, as the cast of the show prepares for their 10th Christmas special, Stephen, a Liverpool native, has written Call The Midwife: A Labour Of Love, a book to commemorate the show’s tenth anniversary.

In addition to sharing his own memories from his time on the show, the book also includes co.

“News from the Brinkwire.”
