Chopping boards are necessary not only for maintaining the appearance of your countertop, but also for hygienic reasons when cooking meat, poultry, vegetables, and other items. The safety of wooden vs. plastic cutting boards has been discussed for years, but one study found that, contrary to popular opinion, wooden chopping boards are actually safer than their plastic counterparts. Cleaning a wooden chopping board isn’t difficult, and all you’ll need are items you probably already have about the house.

You’ll need hot water, dishwashing solutions, and a brush or sponge for this procedure.

Rinse the board with hot water, add soap, and brush away – if there are any knife marks, scratches, or inconsistencies in the wood, pay special attention to those areas.

Even if you just used one side to cut on, make sure to wipe and scrub both sides of the board because meat juices can easily trickle down and contaminate the back.

Then, either dry the board with a cloth or a paper towel, or let it drip dry by holding it up.

If you cut raw meat or poultry on your chopping board, you’ll want to make sure it’s completely clean.

People can get infections from raw meat and chicken, such as Salmonella, so it’s best to be extra careful while handling these products.

In a gallon of water, mix one tablespoon of bleach with one gallon of water and soak the board for a few minutes.

Simply clean the board and dry it with a cloth, paper towel, or drip-dry after that time has elapsed.
