Harry Styles of One Direction says he “didn’t know” Zayn Malik expressed his desire to leave the band.

Harry Styles of One Direction says he “didn’t know” Zayn Malik expressed his desire to leave the band.

During the height of the band’s fame in 2015, Harry Styles admitted that he “didn’t realise” Zayn Malik wanted to leave the band so badly.

In 2015, Zayn left the band in the middle of a world tour. One Direction’s five members were on the Asian part of their fourth stadium tour, the On The Road Again Tour, at the time. Zayn left the band two months into the tour, shortly after performing in Hong Kong on March 18, 2015. He later issued a statement on the official 1D Facebook page, citing “stress” as the reason for his decision, as well as a desire to live a “regular 22-year-old life.” Harry Styles, on the other hand, was completely unaware of the situation.

Harry opened up on Zayn’s departure while promoting his second studio album, Fine Line.

The album has subsequently sold more than 2 million copies and has been certified multiplatinum.

“Yeah, I mean, it was hard, you know,” he told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. Part of it was due to… We were disappointed that someone had abandoned us.

“But it’s also unfortunate that he couldn’t stay since he wasn’t enjoying himself.”

“I thought the tour was going so well at the time,” Harry continued. Everyone had gotten to the point where they were living in a way that made them feel relatively decent when touring.”

He went on to say that he had no idea what Zayn was thinking at the time.

“It seemed like everyone was having a good time,” he remarked. And I’d say a large part of it was us saying, “Wow, I didn’t realize [Zayn] wasn’t having as much fun as he was.”

The Watermelon Sugar singer went on to describe how the rest of the band reacted to Zayn’s departure.

“Obviously, there were huge moments for us,” Harry remarked. We were about to begin recording a new album when we [considered]whether or not we should record it without him.

“However, I’d say the four of us grew closer in that moment. Because this was a stumbling block we hadn’t anticipated.”

Despite Zayn’s abrupt exit, the Adore You singer revealed the band was still going strong. “Brinkwire News in Condensed Form.”
