They definitely had their moments with Richard Gilmore (Edward Herrmann) and Emily Gilmore (Kelly Bishop).
During the seven seasons of the series, the TV pair, beloved by many fans of’ Gilmore Girls,’ endured a series of ups and downs.
Lorelai Gilmore’s (Lauren Graham) parents and Rory Gilmore’s (Alexis Bledel) grandparents were one of the series’ most consistent couples – if we forget their brief breakup – and had some moments when they weren’t exactly a relationship target.
Richard Gilmore kept Rory Gilmore’s meetings at Yale a secret.
The Gilmore family visited Yale in Gilmore Girls season 3, episode 8: “Let the Games Begin,” Richard’s alma mater was particularly excited to give Rory a campus tour. Also, Lorelai came along, believing that her father was trying to encourage Rory to go to Harvard instead of Yale.
Intentions aside, they had a nice time.
They saw the spot where Richard asked Emily to marry him, and one of their rare beautiful moments was the experience of mother and daughter together.

But it all changes when Richard pressures Rory to visit the admissions dean. She, Emily and Lorelai were clearly angry and that caused the trip to be cut short.
They didn’t trust Lorelai Gilmore for dinner at Huntzberger.
Not about their relationship as a couple, but the relationship they have with their daughter. It was not assumed by Richard and Emily that the Huntzberger family would act rudely towards Rory.
And when they were told by Lorelai that the family of Logan Huntzberger (Matt Czuchry) told Rory that she was not good enough for them, they refused to accept that anything terrible had happened.
This drove the wedge between Lorelai and her parents even bigger.
Eventually, having taken time off from Yale, Rory moved in with her grandparents. It was not until later that Richard confronted Logan’s father, Mitchum Huntzberger, at a DAR event Rory arranged (Gregg Henry). Reluctantly, he acknowledged that the dinner was awful indeed.
The fact that Richard and Emily needed Mitchum’s confirmation to believe Lorelai was not one of their shining moments.

Richard Gilmore and Pennilyn Lott kept lunch a secret,
Emily discovered a major secret about her husband in “Gilmore Girls” season 4. She found out that, for decades, Richard had been having lunch with Pennilyn Lott (Linda Gehringer) secretly.
In her social circle, Pennilyn was not only anyone, but Richard’s fiancée. To be with Emily, he broke up with her, but they stayed in touch.
Richard revealed that they had been having lunch together since he and Emily got married, after Pennilyn said something about Lorelai attempting to open her own inn.
