Forget about the Zelda anniversary; 2021 is shaping up to be Metroid’s year.
Fans of the Nintendo Switch will be happy to learn that more Metroid games are on the way.
With The Legend of Zelda’s 35th anniversary approaching in 2021, all eyes will be on Link and his companions.
However, Zelda isn’t the only Nintendo franchise marking a milestone.
The Metroid series, which debuted in 1986 for the Famicom Disk System, will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2021.
Nintendo is releasing Metroid Dread in October to commemorate the Metroid series’ 35th anniversary.
The studio is also working on Metroid Prime 4, which has yet to be given a release date.
According to the newest claims, Nintendo may have another Metroid game in the works.
Nintendo has completed work on the Metroid Prime Trilogy Switch port, according to Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grubb (via VGC).
“The game is finished, but Nintendo has it,” Grubb stated. “I believe the Metroid Prime trilogy is complete, and whether Nintendo distributes it now or later is dependent on a variety of variables.
“I believe that game is sitting in their pocket, waiting for Nintendo to determine when the moment is appropriate, and Nintendo has done this a lot recently, so it’s not odd, it’s not a sign of something horrible happening, it’s not a show of a lack of faith in Metroid… Nintendo can afford to [sit on it], and that is exactly what they are doing.”
Nintendo, according to Grubb, may hold off on releasing Metroid Prime Trilogy until closer to the release of Metroid Prime 4.
QA testing has been a difficulty throughout the pandemic, as Nintendo prioritizes higher-profile games during lockdown.
“I believe QA was a major issue for Nintendo for a long time during the pandemic,” Grubb continues.
“I believe Nintendo concentrated its quality assurance resources on one or two large projects at a time, which resulted in several games that were nearly complete lying on the shelf while its extremely secure QA systems were focused on one or two more critical games.
“The third factor for Metroid Prime Trilogy is that it will almost surely serve as a marketing beat for Metroid Prime 4.
“Right now, we’re having Metroid Dread this year, and then I’m guessing the Metroid Prime trilogy will come out around the same time as Metroid Prime 4, whenever that is.”
